What is a Spine Fellowship?

A Spine Fellowship is an advanced, post-residency training program designed for orthopedic surgeons or neurosurgeons who wish to specialize in the diagnosis, surgical treatment, and management of spinal disorders. These fellowships typically last 1 year and provide in-depth, hands-on experience with a wide range of spinal conditions, including:

  • Degenerative spine diseases (e.g., herniated discs, spinal stenosis)
  • Spinal deformities (e.g., scoliosis, kyphosis)
  • Spine trauma and fractures
  • Tumors and infections of the spine
  • Minimally invasive spine surgery
  • Complex spinal reconstructions and revisions

Fellows work closely with experienced spine surgeons in both academic and clinical settings.  In addition to operative experience, many programs emphasize research, multidisciplinary collaboration, and teaching responsibilities, helping fellows develop into well-rounded spine specialists.

The Foundation supports the San Diego Spine Fellowship program.
